UEC DIRECTS ITS ACTIVITY TOWARD E-CAMPUS
Since the infancy of telecommunication technology, the University of
Electro-Communications (UEC) has produced a large number of
professionals in this field. This tradition continues today. Now that
it is an era of “ highly information oriented society” and “IT
(Information Technology)”, it has become a characteristic of the
university that many of its students are showing strong interest in
state-of-the-art research in IT related areas. This movement has
motivated a group of faculty and staff at UEC to implement the concept
of e-campus, under which a campus- wide network system not only
provides a seamless environment of IT services to all members of the
university, but can also serve as a research and education resource.
For example, researchers may utilize the network in exploring the
potential benefits of IT in daily life, while the network can help
students to quickly familiarize themselves with the IT environment.
Efforts to upgrade the campus-wide information network system,
including the expansion of wireless LAN hubs, are being carried out at
an accelerating pace. As of June 2003, wireless LAN hubs have been
installed in eight locations on campus. As an example of services
available with this system, bulletins from the university, such as the
timetable of classes and announcements of cancelled lectures, can be
accessed easily with personal computers. When the concept of e-campus
is fully implemented, some people may even think of the name UEC as
standing for University of e-Campus. We look forward to further
development and implementation of this concept.
