A RESEARCH PROGRAM SELECTED FOR “THE 21ST
COE PROGRAM”
The research program at UEC entitled “Innovation in
Coherent Optics Science” was selected for the 21st Century Center of
Excellence (COE) Program for fiscal year 2003. The Ministry of
Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has been sponsoring
this COE program since fiscal year 2002. It aims to lend focused
support to individual programs that are selected on the basis of
third-party competitive evaluation, in an effort to establish
world-class research and education foundations in Japanese
universities. Three departments in the Graduate School of
Electro-Communications, namely, Applied Physics & Chemistry,
Electronic Engineering, and Information & Communication
Engineering, as well as the Institute of Laser Science, constitute the
base of the program. These organizations work together to develop one
of the essential technologies of the 21st century. During the course of
the program they also focus on cultivating young talents who may be
expected to play a major role in the development of the technology.
