Multi-frequency Raman Generation pumped with positively chirped pulses

Transient multi-frequency Raman generation uses two short optical pulses having a frequency separation that matches a Raman transition to efficiently generate a wide array of Raman sidebands spanning from the ultraviolet to the infrared. Transient pumping should be the most efficient because the bandwidth of the pump matches the bandwidth of the Raman transition. However, self-phase modulation competes with the Raman process when the pulses are short. For this reason, the pump pulses are stretched by frequency chirping the pulses.

When the pump pulses are positively chirped, red-shifted shoulders appear next to the Raman orders. The red-shifted shoulders have appeared with transient pumping in gas media in hollow fibers as well as in solids with broader band chirped impulsive pumping, where angle tuning has been used for phase matching. We are investigating the origin of these red shifted orders, which in some cases have more power than the Raman orders.
