School Lecture 10

High Pressure Techniques

Chandrabhas Narayana

Chemistry and Physics of Materials Unit, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research,
Jakkur P.O., Bangalore 560064, INDIA.

This talk is aimed at participants who have very limited knowledge of High Pressure techniques. The participantswould be introduced to the area of high pressure research in material science. The lecture will deal with the earlydevelopments in high pressure techniques leading to the latest techinques. There will be a great emphasis on the useof Diamond Anvil Cell as the tool for applying very high pressures. The lecture will discuss the development of variousDiamond Anvil Cells and their advantages and disadvantages. The participants would be given details of selectionof diamonds, gasket, ruby fluorescence, pressure medium used. The participants would also be exposed to thetechnique of achieving ultra high pressures. This would be followed by illustrations of use of high pressure techniquein various probes such as x-ray diffraction (including use in synchrotron sources), Raman spectroscopy, BrillouinSpectroscopy, XAPS, XPS studies with related examples from the literature.
