General Overview from the Co-chairman of the Asian Academic Seminar Organizing Committee

Milan K. SANYAL

Professor, Surface Physics Division, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics,
Kolkata, India

India-Japan Science Council decided to hold Asia Academic Seminar regularly in Japan and India to promote science collaboration among established scientists within Asia and to provide schooling of young PhD students. This year Asia Academic Seminar (AAS) was on "Recent advances in the study of clusters, nano-materials and surfaces with new properties and functions" (November 29 to December 1, 2010) followed by a School on"Synchrotron X-ray Techniques for Nano-Structured Materials" (December 2 to December 4, 2010). Both the events were held in Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics. December 4th was reserved for visit to laboratories and places of interest.

This AAS was to review the state of art of recent advances in the study of clusters, nano-materials and surfaces with new properties and functions along with use of synchrotron X ray techniques for nano structured materials. The topic of discussion covered recent studies of nano materials covering catalysts, PEM Fuel cells, metal nanorod arrays, Graphene devices, materials for rechargeable Li ion battery, Resonant scattering of magnetic materials thin-film etc., Renowned scientists from Japan, India, USA, UK and South Korea delivered talks on these topics and recent results on these topics were discussed. This school was organized to inform and train the participants about the various synchrotron scattering techniques available at the Indian beamline at Photon Factory, Japan. This Indian beamline has been set up as a DST project recently and this school will allow us to increase number of synchrotron users in India and to promote India-Japan collaboration around this Indian beamline. All the sessions in the Asia Academic Seminar and School were very active and deliberations went ontill late in the evening. There were large number of participants and sessions were divided in three parts. Main lectures, short oral presentations and poster presentation by participating PhD students and young scientists. Award certificates were given to the best posters. Everyone felt that the concept of having a school just after the Asia Academic Seminar is new and very useful. This scheme will be able to promote collaborations amongst Asian Scientists in the advanced science frontiers.
