Message from the President of the University of Electro-Communications

Makoto KAJITANI

President of the University of Electro-Communications, Japan

On behalf of the representative of one of the co-organizers for JSPS - DST Asian Academic Seminar 2010, I am quite pleased that the Asian Academic Seminar, as the forum for young researchers from Japan, India and other Asian countries, was held in Kolkata in India and concluded with great success. Also, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), Department of Science & Technology of India(DST), Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP), and other related institutes and members for their invaluable cooperation.

Entering into 21st century, the world faces an unprecedented crisis. In order to realize sustainable society, we must protect the irreplaceable environment and resources on the earth as the common heritage of mankind. That leads us to ask a question, what should we do? As to so many extremely difficult problems ahead, we have no other choice but to develop the science and technology.

However, in finding out concrete solutions regarding these large and complex interdisciplinary issues, there comes the limit of research approaches confined by narrow professional disciplines. In other words, it is quite necessary to adopt the challenging approach to transcend the barriers of the conventional academic fields.

As to the reasons mentioned above, we have a great expectation to the young researchers. We hope the young researchers transcend their own research fields, and challenge the problems by every possibility with their young and flexible brains as well as their courage. In a sense to extend, I do believe that this Asian Academic Seminar aroused the challenging will of the participants.

The University of Electronic-Communications is aspiring to contribute to the society with "UEC vision 2018", based on "Borderless Knowledge", "Cooperation and Collaboration", and "Openness and Transparency" in its management strategy. One of our missions in the vision is to "provide students and researchers from around the world with research environment which encourages open-minded research to come up with unique ideas". We are eagerly wishing to organizing events such as the Asian Academic Seminar to fostering young researchers.
