Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship students

MEXT scholarship students receive thier scholarship funds on a monthly basis and are exempt from admission and tuition fees. Beisdes, round-trip air-ticket between student's country and Japan are also provided.

１．Outline

（１）MEXT Scholarship Programs and Number of Recruitments

（２）Eligibility

Course	Applicants Qualification
Master	Must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification
Doctor	Must have a master's degree or equivalent qualification

（Non-Eligibility：）

• It is not allowed to apply for multiple MEXT Scholarship programs at the same time. Applicants who applied to two or more universities or simultaneously to the "Embassy Recommendation", will automatically be excluded from the application process.
• Military personnel or military civilian employees at the time of their arrival in Japan or during the period of the payment of the scholarship.
• Those who cannot arrive in Japan by the last date of the period specified by MEXT or UEC.
• Previous grantees of Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship programs (including those who withdrew from the scholarship program after arrival in Japan.)

①GECHA ＆ University Recommendation

Jul～mid-Oct.2025	Please contact prospective thesis advisors as soon as possible. Thesis advisors will interview you and give you instructions. Also, they will require you to submit the transcript of your study data or previous degree.
early Nov.2025	Applicant’s deadline for pre-entry.
Nov～Dec.2025	Detailed guidance from UEC (zoom)
7 Jan.2026	Applicant’s deadline for submitting application documents.
Jan～early Feb.2026	UEC  internal screening.
Late Feb.2026	Submission of the recommendation results from UEC to MEXT.
Mid-Jun.2026	Screening by MEXT will be finalized and successful applicants will be decided.
Oct.2026	Enrollment to UEC, congratulation!

②Embassy Recommendation

DATE（JST）	Contents
March to May	Application deadline Schedule varies from country to country.
ー	Please follow instructions from the Embassy of Japan in your country. You will have to submit designated documents to the Embassy of JAPAN and take a test and an interview.
After pass the 1st screening	After passing the first screening conducted by the embassy, you need to find a prospective supervisor by yourself. Univerisies do not have detailed information regarding the "Embassy Recommendation" process of the MEXT scholarship.

（Attention about field of research）

• Basically, an application is not acceptable if the topic is completely different from your research fields or has no relation with your previous study.
• An application of implausible research / study plans will get a bad placement in the submission list.
• If prospective supervisors judge that your application has relation with your study, your application will be acceptable. Please talk carefully about your research plan with prospective supervisor.
