PROFILE

D. D. Sarma

Prof. Dipankar Das (D. D.) Sarma obtained his 5-years Integrated M.Sc. in Physics from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 1977 and Ph.D. degree under the supervision of Prof. C.N.R. Rao from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore in 1982. He was a Research Associate at IISc till the end of 1983. His early work was on gas-metal interaction, oxidation of metals and characterisation of metal oxides using photoelectron spectroscopy. Subsequently, he was at Institut für Festkörperforschung at Kernforschungsanlage, Jülich, Germany as a Guest Scientist during 1984-1986. Main emphasis of his work in Germany was to understand the electronic structure of actinide compounds, mainly U and Th ones, and transition metal silicides, using various electron spectroscopic techniques, such as photoemission, inverse photoemission, Auger electron, and X-ray absorption spectroscopies.

He returned to India in August, 1986 to take up a faculty position at Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit of IISc, Bangalore and has been leading a very active group since then. The main thrust of the group's work has been to understand the electronic structure of a variety of condensed matter systems combining a wide array of experimental and theoretical tools. These works can be primarily categorised in to two groups, namely (i) electric and magnetic properties of strongly correlated systems, mostly based on transition metal oxides and chalcogenides, and (ii) optical and other properties of semiconductor nanoparticles. Over the last few years, the group has also involved itself in studying the growth mechanisms of such nanoparticles, in unravelling internal structures of complex nanoparticle systems, and in probing the issue of ordering via self-assembly of such particles.

During June 2006-November 2008, Prof. Sarma also held positions of the MLS Chair Professorship and the Chairman, Centre for Advanced Materials, both at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Calcutta. The Centre for Advanced Materials, having been founded by him in 2006 and involving a large number of young faculty members, is now one of the most dynamic groups at that place.

Prof. Sarma has been recognised for his work by a large number of international and national awards and is a Fellow of all three national academies of science in India. He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

He is (or has been) an adjunct or honorary Professor at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata, Indian Institute for Science Education and Research, Kolkata, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore as well as a member of the editorial board for a large number of international journals including Solid State Commun., J. Electron Spectrosc., J. Exp. Nanosci., Surface and Interface Analysis , J. Phys. Chem., and Euro. J. Phys. - Appl. Phys. He has published more than 370 scientific papers.
