Michio Niwano

Professor
Laboratory for Nanoelectronics and Spintronics
Research Institute of Electrical Communication
Tohoku University

Michio Niwano received his BSc (1975), MSc (1977), and PhD (1980) from Department of Physics, Faculty of Science at Tohoku University. He moved to Miyagi University of Education in 1980 as Assistant. He returned to Tohoku University in 1987 as Assistant Researcher, and became Associate Professor in 1989, then Professor in 1998. He has been Deputy Director of Research Institute of Electrical Communication, Tohoku University in 2006. His research activities focus on the structure, electronic properties, and chemical reactivity of semiconductor surfaces, and the hybrid interfaces of inorganic materials (silicon, oxides, nanotubes) with organic and biological materials for novel types of electronics, biosensing, and renewable energy applications. He is the author of ~130 refereed papers on photoemission spectroscopy, surface infrared spectroscopy, physics and chemistry of surfaces, interfaces, and nanostructures, semiconductor etching, and nanostructured materials.
