Asian Academic Seminars, an international program of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), are designed to cultivate academic excellence who assumes a leading role in the next generation in Asian region. For that purpose, seminars are supposed to be implemented by selecting the latest advanced and important academic subjects, receiving PhD students and young researchers from Asian countries, providing lectures on the latest scientific topics by world-class prestigious scientists around the world, as well as school that encourages the participants to find specific research approaches and solutions on the subjects.

On the Japan-India Science Council Meeting, a seminar in "surface and interface science including catalysis " was proposed and approved as the Asia Academic Seminar for 2010. We, the University of Electro-Communications (President: Makoto KAJITANI), were privileged to take the responsibility as an organizer of the Seminar, because the coordinator of Japan side in the field belongs to the University. The committee also chose Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kolkata, India as the seminar site, as the coordinator of India side is affiliated with the Institute.

"Recent advances in the study of clusters, nanomaterials and surfaces with new properties and functions", the subject of the seminar, was designed to cover nanoscience and nanotechnology fields that provide us with foundation of the solutions for realization of sustainable development that Asian countries are wishing for. These fields serve as a foundation for industry/economy, environment/energy, information and communication system, and new material/ process creation. The seminar also covers the most advanced and the latest research topics in various academic fields such as science, engineering, life sciences, or global environment science that help contribute to green innovation and life innovation. In addition to the lectures, the seminar prepared the school titled "Synchrotron x-ray techniques for nanometer structured materials" on synchrotron radiation x-ray analysis method for measuring and evaluating the nanomaterials and surfaces. The school was also expected to contribute to help participating students to find and solve specific problems in their research fields. The seminar was arranged by the collaboration of organizing committee with 3 members from each side of Japan and India, the University of Electronic-Communications and Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics.

The Asian Academic Seminar was held from Monday, November 29th to Saturday, December 4th, 2010 with reception of 91 students from Asian countries as well as 29 world-class prestigious researchers from USA, UK, Korea, Japan, India as speakers. JSPS and DST provided them with financial support for their international travels, local transportations, accommodations and registration fees. During the Seminar, through the lectures, the school and the poster session, the speakers and the students were eagerly and actively engaged in discussions on the latest scientific topics. The Seminar was concluded successfully in terms of cross-cultural understanding and international exchange as well.

Finally, I would like to express my great appreciation to the India organizing committee and Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics for their flexible management and warm hospitality that led the seminar to be successful.
